Ahmedabad is one of the fastest growing cities of the decade in the world. The city has been built on the banks of the Sabarmati River and has sustained human occupation since the 11th century. From that time it has been ruled by different factions of people and it was named after the Sultan Ahmed Shah who seems to have foreseen the glorious future to rename it after himself, thereby linking himself with it for eternity. It gained fame as the premier textile producer of the country and till date it one of the large scale producers of different fabrics such as denim. This is why it was named the Manchester of the East.

As mentioned above, when it was named the capital of Gujarat after being separated from the State of Bombay on May 1, 1960, a number of educational institutions designed to provide study and research facilities were founded making it emerge as a center of higher professional education. The industries of the state are greatly influenced by the convenience of location and its past connections with its colonizers. The city is also known for the export of the gems and jewelry and quite noteworthy is its recent emergence as the most preferred area in India for the establishment of automobile manufacturing plants.
Apart from this, the Ahmedabad Stock Exchange is located here and also some of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in India. Through all kinds of trials such as the Bhuj earthquake and the Godhra riots, the city has managed to resurrect itself and became better every time.
